Heavyocity – Oblivion: Aggression Designer (Review)

Heavyocity just released Oblivion: Aggression Designer, a brand new hybrid cinematic library in their Gravity lineup. The popular developer partnered with David Levy (DOOM Eternal, gen:LOCK, Justice League) to create a dark and powerful library well-suited for impactful high-energy tracks. Using the Gravity 2 sound design engine, Oblivion aims to add raw power and aggression to modern media cues. Let’s take a closer look at its contents!

OVERVIEW

Oblivion: Aggression Designer ships with 2000 samples captured from 330 sound sources, spread across five musical categories. These sounds have been sampled from various modular synths and extensively refined for maximum impact. For more versatility, these samples can be used in any of the two provided sound design engines.

As with previous releases, the setup of this library takes place via the Heavyocity Portal application. After registering the serial number, the download can begin right away. Once that is done, the final step is to register the library within Native Access.

Oblivion: Aggression Designer takes about 8.4 GB after installation. It’s important to note that Oblivion: Aggression Designer requires Kontakt 7 (or the free Kontakt 7 player) as it makes use of some of the new sound editing capabilities offered by this new version of the software sampler.

INTERFACE

Oblivion: Aggression Designer is accessible through its two distinct sound design engines: the “Designer” and the “Menu”. These two engines are similar to the ones developed for Gravity 2 and are meant to support different workflows. The general layout is intuitive and features graphics in line with the dark tone of the library.

The Designer is based on a three-channel layout allowing users to combine three samples to create complex, layered sounds. The layout here is a proven concept: three source selectors and a prominent central knob to add a post-processing effect. This central “Macro knob” can control the envelope, tone, drive (saturation/distortion), motion, and space (delay/reverb) and can even be automated.

The bottom of the interface contains buttons leading to more pages of controls: the mixer, sequencer, performance, sound browser, and master FX pages. Out of these, the macro sequencer is particularly interesting. It allows users to modulate the effects applied via the central macro knob on the main page, creating sounds that evolve over time.

The Menu engine in Heavyocity’s Oblivion is streamlined for a faster and more efficient workflow. Users can either choose a preset or a specific sound source directly from the browser. Once selected, the sound can be mapped across the keyboard, allowing for easy pitch adjustments. From there, you can tweak the EQ settings and ADSR envelope to shape the sound further. Additional sound manipulation is available through the macro sequencer, macro control, and master effects, similar to the functionality found in the previously mentioned Designer tool.

INTO SONIC OBLIVION

Oblivion: Aggression Designer includes five categories of sounds: rhythmic pedals, playables (leads and bass), sustains, stings, and transitions.

Heavyocity designed these samples to be dark, ominous, and moody, perfectly aligning with the library’s concept. The sounds are diverse, ranging from piercing high frequencies to deep sub-basses. The bass synths hit hard, while the leads easily cut through any mix. The included rips and glitch effects offer an effortless way to enhance the extreme high-end as well.

On the gentler side, the library also contains a variety of otherwordly drones, for more atmospheric moments. The inclusion of several cue creators is very helpful for inspiration as well, with a nice choice of tonal and atonal sources. Cue creators are pre-designed musical building blocks or templates that help composers quickly generate ideas or structure for a piece, especially useful for film, TV, or game scoring.

The included transitions and stings sound fantastic right from the start, and the selection covers the full range of the sonic spectrum, without much redundancy between sounds.

Although Oblivion: Aggression Designer can certainly deliver powerful, loud sounds, most of the samples have been carefully recorded and processed to maintain clarity and avoid muddiness in the mix. Every sample is designed to fit seamlessly into modern media projects.

CONCLUSION

With Oblivion: Aggression Designer, Heavyocity continues their streak of impressive releases. This library delivers an aggressive and impactful addition to their collection.

The intuitive interface is very easy to adapt to, especially for users familiar with other Heavyocity libraries, thanks to the consistent use of their popular master effects chain. The post-processing options are vast, allowing for almost limitless sound manipulation.

The five sound categories offer a lot of variety, making this library highly versatile for its compact size. As always with Heavyocity, the sounds are distinct, with very little overlap, which is impressive. With its excellent sample selection, Oblivion: Aggression Designer is particularly suited for creating dark metal, tension, and industrial tracks. At an affordable price of $149, we highly recommend it.
