Spitfire Audio gave their Symphony Orchestra library a substantial update a while back. A lot of new content came with their 2025 update, and it’s been on my list ever since to bring all of that into my scoring template for the library properly. Alongside that, I wanted to use the opportunity to fix a couple of stability issues some users encountered, which had been sitting on my list as well. The goal with all of it is to offer a more complete, more reliable template, for people picking it up for the first time and for everyone who’s been using it since day one.

So finally, my SSO Scoring Template for Cubase and Logic Pro just got its biggest update since launch.

This update is completely free for existing users, there is and will be no repurchase or upgrade fee.

Here’s what’s new in more detail:

New instruments

I added the Solo Strings expansion including two solo violins, viola, and cello. Each instrument and their set of articulations now lives in their own folders, routed through a dedicated solo strings sub-stem into your existing Strings Long/Short stems.

The new Motif Brass patches have also been added to the existing brass folders. Now you can access the french horns a4, trumpets a3 and trombones a5 instruments right alongside SSO’s original brass instruments.

I also added the new Oboe Principal performance patch to the template.

New expression maps & articulation sets

I added Performance & All Techniques multi-patches for Solo Strings, Motif Brass and Oboe Principal to the Expression Maps/Articulation Sets version of the template.

All-new expression maps were created for Solo Strings’ solo violin, viola and cello, and for Motif Brass’s trumpets a3, french horns a4 and trombones a5.

Deactivated individual articulation patches for all the new instruments were added to the Expression Maps/Articulation Sets templates too, plus the disabled template, so nothing shows up uninvited if you’re not using it yet.

Some stability fixes

Depending on their systems and technical specs, a template this large in size behaved differently among different users. With this new update, I worked hard on making the template enjoyable for everyone and fixed some minor issues.

Logic Pro: Some tracks were silently sharing a channel strip instead of each getting their own. Changing an instrument on one track would quietly affect a completely different track elsewhere in the session, without any clear notice. If you ever noticed a plugin window that wouldn’t open, or a patch that seemed to “jump” between tracks, this was why. Every affected section has been rebuilt from scratch with properly independent tracks.

Large templates and Kontakt’s thread usage: This one isn’t specific to Cubase or Logic, it comes down to how Kontakt itself distributes threads across instances. Every loaded Kontakt instance, even an empty one, spins up its own set of background threads. In a template this size, that adds up fast, and on some systems it can hit a hard limit. This is most noticeable when adding a larger batch of new tracks at once, which can cause the whole session to become unstable or crash outright.

I spent a good while tracking this one down, since it wasn’t obvious at first where the problem actually originated. It turned out to be a Kontakt-side setting, not something in the template file itself, which means it’s not something I can fix or ship a solution for directly.

What I can do is tell you how to prevent it: in Kontakt, go to Options → Engine and set Multiprocessor Support to Off. This is the generally recommended setting for templates like this one, with hundreds of individual, mostly light instances, your DAW’s own multi-core handling does the heavy lifting, and Kontakt’s internal per-instance setting mostly adds overhead on top. I tested this on my systems thoroughly and it resolved the issue of DAWs crashing completely so far. If you’re working with large templates or plan on expanding this one further, I’d recommend making this change regardless of whether you’ve run into the crash yet.
