Sonuscore – THE PULSE (Review)

After pushing the boundaries of cinematic scoring tools with The Orchestra and The Score, Sonuscore takes a bold step into modern electronic terrain with THE PULSE. Designed as an all-in-one solution for composers working across styles like techno, synthwave, trap, EDM, and cinematic electronica, THE PULSE is not just another instrument — it’s a compositional engine. Built to turn a single note into a dynamic, evolving cue, this tool invites experimentation, real-time performance, and MIDI extraction, offering endless creative paths for musicians.

From crime and tension scoring to full-blown electronic soundtracks, THE PULSE promises to be an inspiration machine—a toolkit for modern composers who need both speed and deep flexibility. Let’s dive in!

OVERVIEW

THE PULSE is a 2.5 GB Kontakt Player instrument, fully compatible with the free Kontakt Player. Inside, you’ll find over 80 multi-layered presets called “Sessions,”, 100 NKIs including pads, basses, drones, effects, and leads, plus a dedicated drum kit engine with 39 custom kits. Every Session contains up to 10 instrument layers with real-time modulation, four variations, and built-in step sequencing.

MIDI drag-and-drop functionality makes it easy to extract and customize performances inside your DAW, while customizable FX chains and sound browser tools invite deep personal expression. It’s a compositional platform as much as it is a library — one that responds musically and dynamically to your ideas.

USER INTERFACE

THE PULSE features a streamlined, interactive interface that offers immediate playability and in-depth control. The Find Page acts as your hub, letting you sort and preview Sessions by genre (Cinematic, Modern Genre, Ensemble) and character (e.g., aggressive, ambient, epic). Presets load quickly and provide instant feedback with a single key press or chord.

THE PULSE – Find Tab

Upon loading a Session, the Main Page displays the first five of ten available instrument slots. Each layer includes adjustable parameters for volume, panning, pitch, FX chains, reversals, and more — all of which can be modulated with the mod wheel or LFOs. The ability to control instrument dynamics and FX via modulation allows for richly evolving performances, perfect for real-time scoring or expressive MIDI programming.

THE PULSE – Main GUI

One of the most powerful features is the Ducker, which automatically sidechains specific instrument slots to another — most commonly used to allow kick drums to breathe through dense mixes. It not only improves clarity but adds rhythmic motion that feels glued and professional.

The Play Page houses the sequencer, where composers can adjust velocity, pitch, and even the chance that a note will play, allowing for controlled randomness. This is particularly useful for evolving underscore or game music that needs to feel alive over time.

THE PULSE – Play Tab

Complementing the main instrument is the Drum Kit patch, a fully modular 9-pad engine with category/tag browsing, sound swapping, FX per lane, and randomization. From 808 kits to cinematic booms, each pad can be sculpted with its own envelope and processing chain. The drum engine brings THE PULSE into beat-making territory, making it equally comfortable for trailer sound design and club-ready grooves.

Despite its layered features, the GUI remains fast and uncluttered — an elegant balance between “plug and play” and deep programming.

IN PRACTICE

As a compositional tool, THE PULSE excels at inspiration through interaction. When you trigger a Session with a key or chord, the instrument offers evolving textures, rhythms, and pulses that respond to performance dynamics (modwheel) and key switch variations.

For film scoring, particularly in futuristic, cyberpunk, or thriller genres, THE PULSE enables you to create full cues from scratch — the mod wheel acts as a dynamic mixer that pushes sequences from subtle tension to full-force climax. Red key switches toggle between different sections (Intro, A, B, C), essentially mapping out an entire cue structure across your keyboard.

Trailer composers will benefit from THE PULSE’s ability to stack rhythmic and harmonic layers with cinematic impact quickly. Many Sessions are pre-synced to tempo and feature percussion-forward patterns ideal for risers, transitions, or dramatic reveals.

For electronic music producers, the library acts like a modular sketchpad for a variety of genres. THE PULSE is capable of producing fully fleshed-out tracks using mostly internal elements very quickly — a testament to the engine’s accessibility and creative power. Game composers will appreciate the subtle tools built into the sequencer. The step chance and velocity curves allow for non-repetitive background music that can adapt dynamically to scenes without feeling looped or mechanical.

THE PULSE – Channel FX

Even for TV composers working on crime and tension cues, THE PULSE offers a vast stylistic palette. Pads, synths, and risers can be layered with percussion from the drum kits to form evolving tension beds. One particularly useful workflow: load a Session, sculpt it with the mod wheel, key switches, effects and arpeggiator, then extract the MIDI to isolate its melodic content and assign it to your own hybrid orchestral instruments.

Ultimately, whether you’re using THE PULSE as a sketching tool, a rhythmic engine, or the centerpiece of an electronic score, it adapts effortlessly — inviting both improvisation and refinement.

THE SOUND

The variety of sound elements in THE PULSE is genuinely impressive. Each Session is crafted with attention to tone, texture, and clarity — everything sounds “release ready” without requiring too much additional processing. Pads swell with cinematic depth, synths cut through mixes without harshness, and the percussive elements punch with a satisfying weight.

Composers looking to build rich, evolving soundbeds or underscores will find plenty to explore. Start by choosing a Cinematic Session, lower the mod wheel for a subtle pulse, and let layered drones and tonal percussion provide a moving bed. As you increase modulation, new instrument layers fade in — often introducing melodic textures, distorted synths, or risers — allowing your underscore to grow in intensity organically.

The included pads and leads offer beautiful harmonic depth, especially when layered. Sound categories like Burning Clouds, Photon Storm, and Floating Grains are particularly effective for ambient or emotional cue building. Additionally, the organic instruments — including intimate pianos, strings, and hybrid choir patches — help blend synthetic layers with natural textures for a more nuanced palette.

The Drum Kits cover a wide range — from retro 808s to cinematic booms and gritty industrial percussion. They come dry by default, allowing you to shape them with onboard FX or your own chain, which enhances their usability across styles. Whether layering in subtle rhythm or driving an entire cue with punchy hits, the percussion sounds are solid, responsive, and highly usable.

One of the most underrated aspects is the cohesion of the sound library — everything feels like it belongs together in a dystopian futuristic setting. The layering engine ensures that even complex presets remain musically coherent, and the ability to solo, mute, and shape each layer gives you full control over the final mix.
